Rumor about Huawei

It has been reported that Huawei is working on a possible replacement of the ubiquitous Android OS. Anonymous sources talking to the South China Morning Post have commented that the Chinese tech giant is developing the alternative operating system in case the company ends up receiving a similar US-imposed ban to the one that ZTE is currently facing.

A fresh rumor concerning Huawei has recently surfaced, although the source for this latest tidbit is considered to be a credible newspaper of record. The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post has published an article citing people familiar with the matter in regard to Huawei developing its own OS. It is believed there are concerns that the Shenzhen-based company is under investigation from the US Department of Justice for violating sanctions against Iran. ZTE has received hefty punishments for breaking US sanctions, and it is possible Huawei will face the same if found culpable of any trade violations.

Other companies have tried to break the duopoly of Android and iOS. However, it’s not likely that Huawei is planning on challenging the status quo but rather preparing for the possibility of losing access to Google’s services. The Chinese company is the largest telecommunications manufacturer in the world and has vast resources to put into research and development. It would not be impossible for Huawei to develop (or finish developing) a custom operating system capable of offering similar levels of functionality as Android.

There have been reports about Huawei producing its own OS before, and the company has already moved toward reducing reliance on foreign components with the continued use of Kirin SoCs in its products. But it would likely be immensely difficult for a Huawei-branded OS to succeed outside of its domestic market.

Huawei is updating the Honor 7X to EMUI 8.0 and Android Oreo on Monday

Huawei announced today that beginning on Monday, it will roll out EMUI 8.0 for the Honor 7X, which is bundled with Android 8.0 Oreo. If you're not familiar with EMUI, it's Huawei's Android skin, which is a pretty thick custom layer of the OS.

But that also means that there are new features on top of what's new with Oreo. Huawei is touting the following features as part of EMUI 8.0:

New floating navigation dock – With the newly added home screen shortcut, the floating navigation dock lets users navigate and operate their device from anywhere on the screen.
Updated Setting menu and Phone Manager – The redesigned Settings menu is clearer and more intuitive. The updated Phone Manager automatically optimizes the system based on usage patterns, keeping the smartphone running at top performance all the time.
Photo gallery recycle bin – Users can now restore photos and videos if they accidentally delete them. The Gallery in the new UI features a recycle bin which retains deleted photos and videos for 30 days.
Seamless LinkedIn integration – Contacts and Email in EMUI 8.0 let users sync the career details of their LinkedIn contacts, making it faster and easier to manage contacts across platforms.
Link up two Bluetooth devices – Smartphones are now able to connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time, boosting mobile experience and fun.
Face unlock - Scans a recognized user's face to unlock instantly. It also prevents unlocking with closed eyes, and allows only device owners to see lock screen notification details, ensuring maximum security.
EMUI 8.0 first debuted on Huawei's Mate 10, which touted AI features that complement the Kirin 970's Neural Processing Unit. Huawei's new devices, like the P20 and the P20 Pro, are now shipping with EMUI 8.1, which is bundled with Android 8.1 Oreo.

"The latest EMUI 8.0 upgrade once again demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative mobile technologies and exceptional value to users worldwide," said George Zhao, President of Honor. "As a global leader, we continue to combine state-of-the-art technology with affordability, so everyone can have a productive, entertaining and fun lifestyle."

EMUI 8.0 will roll out to the Honor 7X as an OTA update beginning on Monday.
